I’ve reached full blown denial. It was 75 degrees this weekend, so I kept the house in the 60s and myself in sweats so I could pretend it was winter, because I’m over summer fashion. I would like to put on the fireplace, drink warm lattes, and see my cold breath in the morning. Is that too much to ask?
My obsession with leaving summer behind launched me into the hard reality that I haven’t properly prepared for winter and I need to whip my ass into gear. And if I’m not ready, then it’s a good chance you’re not ready either (I’m a planner and highly organized person after all).
Here is a list of things I need to start chipping away at to prepare for winter:
Winterize sprinklers (I personally like to have this done around Thanksgiving)
Unhook and store outdoor hoses
Have HVAC system serviced (I have myself on a bi-yearly plan to make sure I’m all set before summer and winter)
Change HVAC system filters
Check chimney and fireplace and make sure it’s working properly (I like mine serviced every 2 years)
Generator Maintenance (if you have a generator make sure you have it checked so it works if power goes out and make sure you have fuel for it if needed)
Clean gutters if needed
Check for air leaks (might need to replace weatherstripping)
Cover, store, protect your outdoor Furniture
Clean outdoor lights (I find each season they need cobwebs and bugs cleaned out to help keep them looking nice and working well)
Walk around your property and note if any trees or plants need special attention or covering (could anything damage your property in a storm and needs attention?)
Are your humidifiers in good shape? Do you need any filters?
Snow supplies (shovel, melt, car scraper, boots, gloves, etc)
Storm supplies (flashlights, lanterns, batteries, water, food, blankets)
Test your sump pump (if you have one so it’s ready for the thaw after winter)
Check your insurance policy to make sure you know what is and isn’t covered in case some major appliance that will get you through winter craps out on you or something else winter related takes place. Always good to refresh your memory!
Clean winter coats (having them nice and fresh for winter is fab)
Check to make sure boots are in good shape (no holes, etc)
Any areas of winter wardrobe that could use an update or need filling?
