To make things easier, I have created a ShopMy Page with all the goodies from today’s newsletter and previous newsletters. Full disclosure, I may earn a small commission from a retailer if you make a purchase through any of the affiliate links sprinkled throughout this newsletter. As always, if you need help finding something or need ideas for a project, feel free to reach out!
As a single woman in my 30s, I am surrounded by couples and their families. Everyone wants to do something to their house to fit their current lifestyle of running after little ones. It might be finishing a basement, converting a room to a home gym, adding a backyard shed for all the outdoor toys, a bigger kitchen with better storage, a walk-in pantry, a guest room, etc. For me, I dream of a finished basement (half of it for a gym and sauna), a coffee station, a pool, a backyard shed, and a screened porch. But when do we stop wanting to do things to our houses? Do we eventually just want to upgrade or move? Are we chasing something unattainable? When are we just content?
In reality, we don’t need all these additions to our home. We just need a roof over our heads, a place to sleep, food to eat, and a lot of love. We have everything we need. But it’s also OK to want more! To want to aspire to something. To love making beautiful spaces, having places to tuck things away, places to entertain and relax, and to keep clutter at bay so our minds can be clear. What I find most important, is to check in with myself and ask “why do i want this?” If it’s because someone else down the street has something I don’t, then I need to reevaluate. If it’s because it will make my life smoother, more enjoyable, and full of joy, then dream away!
Personally, I love the process of creating beautiful spaces and experimenting in my house; it makes me happy and creatively fulfills me. I also feel a sense of pride when I make a change to my house and look at it knowing all the work that went into making that change. I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings; therefore, it’s important to me to curate a home that allows my brain to declutter. Sometimes that means, having places to tuck things away, sometimes that means certain color palettes in my home, and sometimes that means adding less improvements to my plate; the mental load of a home can be exhausting if you let it, but it can also be really fun! Here’s to letting your home be a place of joy!
