Every season, I learn ways to run my house more efficiently. Some catastrophe happens and I streamline even more, and I’m already a very organized person. One day, I’ll have this place running like a well oiled machine, but so far this season I’ve learned. . .
Hire the person who will do the job well and right the first time. This keeps you from having to hire someone else to fix the first person’s work. Cutting corners doesn’t necessarily save money and it certainly doesn’t save time. I’ve had to learn this lesson twice this month.
Put weed preventer down before it rains to save yourself the step of having to water large amounts of mulch. Work smarter.
Put yourself on auto renewal or put a reminder in your phone for seasonal services like irrigation start up and hvac biannual service.
Do install things that make your life easier and more organized! I installed a new hose holder outside and a valet hook in my closet. Both are already life changing.
Keep building your tool box. I just added in spackle and sand paper to mine!
This past week’s lesson taught me not to try to cut corners on things that I need done right/well on the first try. Last year, I waited MONTHS to purchase some shelves from Pottery Barn I had been eyeing for a while to put in my laundry room to display vases, planters, and other items. Think a version of utility mixed with a chic potting/flower arranging area. They finally went on sale and I pulled the trigger. Then I waited several more months to have the shelves installed with what I thought was a reputable handyman. And I learned the hard way. I should’ve gone with a handyman referred by a friend and who’s work I could see first hand (at a friend’s house). The handyman I hired ended up leaving holes in my wall and incorrectly installing the shelves, which left me with new problems and my project incomplete. A handyman referred by a friend came to the rescue and fixed the shelves! On my end, I am now spackling the (very noticeable) holes left by the first handyman and will sand that down in a few days time.
Once, I complete my laundry room shelf project (pray to the Gods above I don’t have to repaint), I have a few other mini projects on the horizon this week.
Get accent plants for boxwood planters in front and in back. Go with classic, easy to maintain plants. I do NOT have a green thumb so simple is best for me (learned this the hard way before). My boxwoods stay in the planters year round, so I switch out accent plants seasonally to jeuge them up.
Follow up about putting a potted boxwood hedge on my back deck for privacy from my neighbors who knocked down nine privacy trees.
Figure out if cane barrel chairs can be recovered or not based on their construction. I have an inquiry into Crate & Barrel to find this out as it’s not obvious at all. If they can be recovered, then the fabric hunt will commence.
Order paint samples from Samplize for back hallway project and potential primary bathroom project. I may throw in some paint colors to look at for repainting my kitchen too. I’m VERY excited about this.
