The day completely got away from me, so I’m coming to your inbox later than usual. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, I’ve been helping a dear friend with a bathroom and kitchen renovation. Everyone has a different process for designing spaces and how they make decisions, but I wanted to share some basics I think might be helpful to EVERYONE.
When redoing a space, measure what you already have in place (maybe you want to use that couch you have or want something smaller so this is good to know measurements). What do you like and dislike about how things fit now? Do you wish you had more room or less room somewhere? Can you move around freely? This is ESPECIALLY important in tight spaces like bathrooms where you’re working with a tub/shower, sink, and toilet. Learn from your current space to make the best new iteration of it.
Always measure out items being permanently installed like toilets, vanities, doors (check swing and if you have clearance or if it’ll hit something). You’d be surprised how much a few inches matter in certain situations. Don’t throw in the towel and “live” with something if there is another solution, get creative.
Mark how far out furniture, sinks, toilets, etc. will come in the space so you can plan accordingly. Specifically in a bathroom you need ample space to move around, place a bath mat, have access to the bath to bathe little ones, etc. Toilets come in various depths and heights, and they have different footprints, so this is important to keep in mind! And don’t forget counter height! I like using painters tape to give myself visual references, because I can’t ballpark what 27 inches looks like off the top of my head.
Take note of any restrictions the space gives you. Maybe you don’t have room for a glass shower door
because it can’t swing out. Maybe your closet can’t have a door and that needs to be taken off. Maybe you can only have specific light fixtures in the space based on existing electric (unless you are OK with moving it).
Consider how you will use the space and in the future (but this is less important). If it’s going to be high traffic area, pick finishes accordingly that are durable. Yes you might like a perfectly white bathroom with white grout, but if your kids are going to be bathing and splashing water everywhere your white grout is going to dirty quite fast and maybe you should consider a gray. All things to take into account and get the most bang for your buck!
