I spend a lot of time obsessing over my house. There is always something to fix, something to upgrade, and something that needs (debatable) changing. Homeownership is a wild ride. My living space is constantly evolving to my ever changing needs and my urge to encapsulate myself in a bubble of beauty.
Currently, I want to rip out all my canned lights. I’ve gotten on a ladder and tried to pry them from the ceiling, which was unsuccessful and probably dangerous. They’re driving me nuts, but it’s not practical to replace dozens of canned lights. It would require patching, repainting, and potentially new electrical work. So I’m accepting that I will have to live with some harsh canned lighting, but there are some changes I can make to lessen the blow. I am going to swap out canned lights for fun light fixtures where it makes sense and consider dimmers in other spots to soften the lighting. And since I’m not a professional, just someone with an appreciation for interior design, I will most likely make mistakes.
Here are some of my favorite light fixtures right now. I’m intrigued by small flush mounts in place of canned lighting in kitchens and closets. I’m also seeing more options for rechargeable sconces, so you don’t have to open up a wall and add electrical; this would also be great for apartment/condo living.
