The powers that be say not to make decisions during mercury retrograde and that things might go awry, especially technology. In the past few days, I’ve been locked out of my bank account for “too many attempts” despite consistently putting in the right password, a shower curtain rod came crashing down in the middle of the night, one of my backlit bathroom mirrors has crapped out (and my research tells me it’s not an easy fix), Substack has been constantly refreshing on me every word I type, and I got my tax bill, amongst many other horrors. Needless to say, I’m glad it’s over and today we’re being cleansed by the rain here in Richmond.
Lately, I’m obsessed with having an orangery. Once used primarily for growing oranges made up of planks and sacking, now they’re sunlight filled rooms. Different than conservatories (usually have more glass in the overall construction, think greenhouse) and sunrooms (solid roof, more enclosed like the rest of the house). According to Westbury Garden Rooms, “modern orangeries generally comprise a solid base with supporting columns extending up to a flat roof, which houses a glazed roof lantern.” The roof (think similar to a cupola) is the defining characteristic, as it can be designed in a variety of shapes and scales. And thanks to materials like triple-glazed glass and solar-control coatings, you can enjoy these spaces year-round. Doesn’t that sound so delicious, architecturally stunning, and romantic! I dream of curling up with a book in my future orangery someday.
Below are some stunning examples of orangeries I love and lust after. . .
