Lately I’ve been thinking about how spaces make me FEEL and how I want my space to make me feel.
My family once stayed at the Gramercy Park Hotel (RIP) and I felt like I was in a murder mystery or the board game CLUE. The colors were aggressive and I was waiting for someone to pop out from behind a velvet curtain with a candlestick. While I can appreciate red velvet curtains and bright colors, they’re not my surrounding of choice for sleeping every night. And there were some very strange times in that hotel that week, and I will always partially blame the decor. I can still see that bright red in my memory.
At this point in my life, I want my space to feel calming, relaxing, but also not boring. A place where I can exhale and let my stress melt away but also has some personality. Maybe throw in some “irresponsible” choices or furniture that looks cool but isn’t super functional, after all, I don’t have kids yet, so I should lean into that. This might look different in different rooms of my house depending on how I use the space; my bedroom and my living room are going to be totally different vibes for instance. I also think a lot of us plan for the “what if” or the “potential future” in our lives instead of how we want our spaces to feel and function now. I know I’m guilty of it; I’m not blameless here. ENOUGH OF THAT. It’s time to lean into how we want to feel and live our lives now. So cheers to that!

Here are some rooms I’ve been drawn to lately and how they make me feel…
1. This room immediately makes me feel cozy and cocooned. I want to jump in that bed and be enveloped in warmth and lock out the world. I love how it reads peaceful and elegant but also has an edge / / Ben Pentreath (designer), Paul Massey (image)
2. This powder room makes me want to put on a red lip and like I’ll walk out feeling taller than I actually am. It’s elevated but not overdone. / / Marie-Louise Sjogren (designer)
3. Princess room where I would wake up feeling refreshed and like I aged backwards. Warm, cozy, timeless (won’t get sick of it). / / Rita Konig (designer), Michael Sinclair (image)
4. This makes me want to have a gorgeous cocktail by the fire listening to friends tell outrageous stories and laugh nonstop. / / Rita Konig (designer), Michael Sinclair (image)
5. Just walking in here would make me feel clean and classy even if I was wearing sweats. Imagine a bubble bath in here with hair up in a loose bun reading a book. / / Rita Konig (designer), Michael Sinclair (image)
6. A kitchen that could almost make me become a chef. I picture sushi for some reason. / / Ann Boyd (designer), Paul Massey (image)
7. This room makes me want to let out a massive sigh and melt into the chaise. It feels peaceful and like the weight of the world could be lifted off my shoulders in here. It’s clean and elegant and can clear out my cluttered mind. / / John Tanner (designer), Christopher Horwood (image)
