I Have Yet To Miss a Monday
And I'm Not Starting Now
Since I started this lovely little newsletter, I have yet to miss my self-imposed deadline of sending it out Monday (usually in the morning). And today, after a 7 hour drive, an exhausted body, and depleted mind, I wanted to put off this newsletter. I wanted to wait until tomorrow. Would anyone notice? Probably not. But I would. I would know that I hadn’t honored my commitment to show up for myself, my writing, and my creativity. Because, truth be told, I had done all the collages and all I had left were the words, which is the easiest, most enjoyable part for me. And I wouldn’t wake up tomorrow happy I had pushed the newsletter off, but disappointed in myself.
As I wrestled with the idea of putting off the newsletter for most of my 7 hour drive, I started thinking about our interiors and the stories we tell ourselves about them. The house that has to be tidy before friends come over, the apologies we make to our guests when our homes aren’t spotless and smelling of fresh roses and laundry, the interior design that is never quite finished, the house that is never fully renovated or complete, the beautiful home we live in that can’t possibly be our final destination or our dream house, the floors that have to be spotless before the cleaning lady comes, the things that have to be shoved in drawers for no one to see, and all the real life that is hidden, tucked away, and put off. Do we not want people to see our real homes and our real lives? Are we scared we’ll be judged? Or are we really just judging ourselves? Our homes reveal the most intimate parts of ourselves and we should be willing and proud to show them, no matter how messy or different they might be from others.
